From time to time, I get asked "Why do you switch styles so often?"

Truth be told that I'm not exactly sure why. There isn't one all encompassing point as to why. However, there's usually a pattern to the mess.

First, I'll be honest and say that I get bored rather quickly.

I have artistic ADD, which doesn't help my case.

Secondly, commercialism. I see myself as a commercial artist. That entails providing art for someone else's use, not my own. I try to gauge what an editor wants and needs and I try to provide the service to fit. Sometimes I try to tweak my style so that the look is not completely different from what's come before. Adaptibility is good from time to time.

I also think some people put too much emphasis on style. Hence, the question: "Why do you switch styles so often?" To me, my art is like a car. I may switch the chasis, but the engine will always remain the same. I may upgrade the engine, put in a turbo, etc. but the the engine or heart of the car will always be the same.
American comics, Japanese styled manga, and every kind of art in between that I've toyed with have all been put together with the mechanics and structure I've learned over the years. I change the exterior to suit the occasion.

Art is art, is art. I don't think there's a right or a wrong. (I never had formal training, so please don't shoot me if there is otherwise)
However, I think there IS a right and a wrong for doing commercial work.

The only right thing one should do is to make sure you get work. Simple, huh?
How do you get work? Keep competitive with the market and keep making sure you get better artistically. For me, keeping competitive means, I change my chasis every so often.
